2019 Conference USA Championships Day 4: FIU Finishes First

The last finals session of the 2019 Conference USA Championships featured six events including the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay.

After four days of serious competition, Florida International University takes first place in the meet with 935.5 points. Rice University took second with 872.5 points and University of North Texas came in third with 522 points.

Women’s 1650 Free

FIU kicked off finals strong with senior Oceane Peretti hitting a 16:22.73 and taking first place in the 1650. Rice junior, Claire Therien, came in second with 16:28.62, and FAU junior, Spence Atkins came in third with 16:43.29.

In fourth place came Rice senior, Hanna Huston, with a 16:45.45, followed by Rice junior Sarah Nowaski (16:51.03), ODU freshman, Jacqueline Tinneny (16:56.41), Rice freshman, Shannon Jelley (17:07.34), and Marshall junior, Angelica DiMarzio took eighth place with 17:08.62.

Women’s 200 Back

Rice sophomore, Ellery Parish, took another win in the 200 back, going a solid 1:56.75. In second place came FIU freshman, Holly Shepherd, with a 1:56.93 and in third place, Marshall junior, Jordyn O’Dell swam a 1:58.45.

Marshall senior, Caroline Wanner, took fourth place with 1:59.08, followed by Old Dominion junior, Jacklyn VandePoel (1:59.37), UNT sophomore, Robyn Lee (1:59.75), FIU freshman, Michaela Trnkova (2:01.56), and Rice senior, Rabea Tzenetos in eigth place with 2:02.48.

Women’s 100 Free

FIU senior, Naomi Ruele, dominated the 100 free with a 48.45. Right behind her came Marshall junior, Catherine Bendziewicz, with a 49.55 and in third place, UNT sophomore, Leigh Faires McGee, with a 49.73.

In fourth place came Rice freshman, Marta Cano Minarro, with a 49.89, followed by Rice junior, Kate Nezelek (49.99), Rice sophomore, Lindsay Mathys (50.05), Marshall sophomore, Darby Coles (50.30), and in eighth place, FIU freshman, Helga Fodor, with a 50.46.

Women’s 200 Breast

Marie-Claire Schillinger from Rice took the lead in the 200 breast with a quick 2:09.67. Following Schillinger, FIU junior, Carita Luukkanen, took second place with 2:12.75 and Rice freshman, Phillis Range, placed third with 2:15.15.

FIU junior, Taylor Grabenhorst, took fourth place with 2:16.36, followed by Old Dominion senior, Emilie Petit (2:16.37), Rice sophomore, Nicole Limberg (2:17.01), Rice sophomore, Cailey Renken (2:17.96), and UNT freshman took eighth place with a solid 2:20.13.

Women’s 200 Fly

Lindsay Mathys, sophomore from Rice University, took first place in the 200 fly with a strong 1:58.59. In second place came FIU sophomore, Stephanie Hussey, with a 2:00.44, and in third, Rice freshman, Shannon Jelley, hit a 2:01.70.

In fourth place came Rice sophomore, Brittany Bui, with a 2:01.77, followed by FAU junior, Spence Atkins (2:01.82), Marshall senior, Maddie Schaffer (2:03.02), Rice junior, Sarah Nowaski (2:04.43), and in eighth place, FIU sophomore, Camille Wishaupt, finished with 2:04.73.

Women’s 400 Free Relay

Florida International University’s relay swooped in and took first place in the 400 free relay with a 3:18.66. The relay consisted of Sara Gyertyanffy who led off with 51.04, followed by Helga Fodor, splitting 49.69, Megan Bowen with 49.46, and anchored in by Naomi Ruele, touching the wall with a 48.47. FIU was followed by Rice University with a 3:19.30 and Marshall University in third place with 3:21.93.

UNT took fourth place with 3:25.79, followed by Old Dominion with 3:30.26, and FAU taking sixth place with a 3:32.40.
