2019 Canadian Swimming Trials Prelims Day 2: Ruck, Smith, and Overholt Post Fast Times

(Toronto, CAN)- Day two of the 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials are underway at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre. Fast times were posted in prelims by Ruck, Smith and Overholt. Nikola Miljenic and Tess Cieplucha surprised the crowd with key drops off their seed times and placing.

Touching first well ahead of the competition was Aureli Rivard of UL in a time of 1:01.01, behind her Arianna Hunsicker of SKSC hit in a time of 1:06.47, and third was Samantha Ryan in 1:07.68. Rounding up the top eight were Sabrina Duchesne (1:18.14) fourth, Katarina Roxon (1:10.14) fifth, Shelby Newkirk (1:18.84) sixth, Gabby Baird (1:13.99) seventh, and and Krystal Shaw (1:27.35) eighth.

Hitting first in prelims in a time of 55.25 was Alexander Elliot of UL, in second was Matthew Cabraja in 1:04.70, Zach Zona of NHAC was third in 1:05.04. Also making their way in the top eight was Caleb Arndt (1:02.49) in fourth, Hicham Boufekane (1:11.36) fifth, Aidan Elliot (1:05.34) sixth, Matt Miller (1:09.04) seventh, and Tristan-Alexandre Pruneau-Tourny (1:17.13) eighth.

It was a close race with the top four all breaking :55. First was SCAR’s Taylor Ruck in a time of 54.41, right behind in second was Penelope Oleksiak of TSC at 54.57, and third was Kayla Sanchez from AAC in 54.80. Taking fourth was Rebecca Smith (54.91), Louis Hansson (55.17) fifth, Alyson Ackman (55.27) sixth, Alexia Zevnik (55.31) seventh, and Margaret MacNeil eighth (55.38).

Yuri Kisil of WD took the men’s 100 free, the only to break :49 in the time of 48.95. In second was Dylan Carter of UNAT in 49.39, and third was Mark Thormeyer in 49.48. It was a close race for fourth with Carson Olafson (49.94) out touching Owen Daly (49.98). Dropping from his sixteenth seed to sixth was Nikola Miljenic of UNAT (50.07), in seventh Joshua Liendo (50.12), and eighth Javier Acevedo (50.24).

Touching first and the only in the field to break 1:08 was SCAR’s Kierra Smith at 1:07.14. Faith Knelson of ISC hit the wall in 1:08.26 just ahead of UMAN’s Kelsey Wog 1:08.32. Rachel Nicol touched fourth the last to break the 1:09 barrier in a time of 1:08.85. Fifth was Kina Kucheran (1:09.45), sixth was Sophie Angus (1:09.45), seventh Avery Wiseman (1:10.09), and eighth Bailey Herbert (1:10.45).

Gabe Mastromatteo of KSS just out touched TSC’s Richard Funk in 1:01.45 to Funk’s 1:01.47. Third was Connor Isings of PCSC in 1:02.10. Fourth was Alexander Milanovich (1:02.20), fifth James Dergousoff (1:02.34), sixth James Guest (1:02.67), seventh was Eli Wall and eighth Jaren LeFranc (1:03.48).

Fast finishes made up the top three spots, all hitting FINA 2019 A cut times. Emily Overholt of UBCSC touched first in 4:41.04, Sydney Pickrem of UNCAN was second in 4:41.50 and Tess Cieplucha of OAK dropped over 10 seconds off her seed time for third in 4:42.32. Fourth was top seed Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson (4:45.06), fifth Mary-Sophie Harvey (4:46.52), sixth Bailey Andison (4:47.48), seventh Kathrin Demler (4:50.12), and eighth Summer McIntosh (4:51.23).

Claiming the first seed going into finals is Tristan Cote of UCSC in a time of 4:21.41, Josh Zakala of ISC was second in 4:22.14 and Cole Pratt of CASC dropped 10 spots and almost 10 seconds in his time of 4:22.41. Fourth was Collyn Gagne (4:23.75), fifth Montana Champagne (4:24.14), sixth Brian Palaschuk (4:24.14), seventh Etienne Paquin-Foisy (4:25.04), and eighth Brodie Young (4:25.75).

Danielle Hanus of ISC touched first in 28.30 ahead of Emma Ball of GMAC’s 28.36. Third was Jade Hannah also of ISC in 28.52. Ingrid Wilm was fourth (28.70), Madison Broad fifth (28.92), sixth Daphne Danyluk, Emma Terebo seventh, and Kristina Steins eighth (29.25).

The top three men hit first all breaking :26 barrier. In first was Tim Zeng of CHENA in 25.68 ahead of UNVAR’s Javier Acevedo 25.84, and Cole Pratt of CASC finished third in 25.87. Fourth was Brandon Dyck (26.14), fifth Colin McDermott (26.21), sixth Guillermo Cruz Zuniga (26.25), seventh Sebastian Somerset (CASC), and eighth Kyle Robrock (26.43).

Hitting first was Alyvan Wyck-Smart of VVAC in 1:24.65, second was Clemence Pare of MUST in 1:00.32, and third was LASER’s Ens Nikita in 1:29.59.

Taking first was Jonathan Dieleman of BVOSC in 57.97, and behind him was Jacob Brayshaw in 2:06.61.
