Connor Bjellum Wins Four Times At North Dakota High School State Meet

Connor Bjellum of Fargo South had quite the meet at the North Dakota High School State Championships.

His day started in the 200-yard medley relay. Fargo South won the race with a time of 1:37.18. The team consisted of backstroker Josh Olson, breaststroker Luke Bergstrom, butterflier Andrew Hollingsworth and Bjellum, who swam freestyle. Century finished almost a second later in 1:38.06, and Minot posed a time of 1:39.26.

Bjellum then brought home a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. The senior won by four-tenths of a second with a time of 1:44.56. Fargo Davies’ Maxwell Lingle touched second. Sam Artz of Century took third with a time of 1:46.89.

Minot’s Gerald Brown touched first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:56.38, winning by over a second. Hollingsworth touched second with a time of 1:58.00, and Century’s Kyler Alme rounded out the top three in 1:59.25.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Century’s Quentin Hogue took first place with a time of 21.72. Bergstrom was second in 21.75, just three-hundredths of a second behind Hogue. WF Sheyenne’s Zach Bueling touched third in 22.24.

Minot’s Coel Armagost won the diving competition with a score of 475.10. He was followed by Jamestown’s Cody Lutman and Mandan’s Johnny Mindt. 

Hollingsworth took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.52. West Fargo’s Jacob Nygaard was second in 53.23, and Artz was third with a time of 54.02.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Bjellum picked his second individual win of the day. He touched the wall in 46.71, winning by over a second. Hogue was second in 48.36. Bobby Poynter of Fargo Davies was third with a time of 48.78.

Maxwell Lingle of Fargo Davies touched first in the 500-yard freestyle. He posted a time of 4:50.14, just ahead of Fargo North’s Shaun Mengelkoch, who finished in 4:50.41. WF Sheyenne’s Cole Weisz was third in 4:55.19.

Hogue, Adam Noland, Artz and Taylor Hedge teamed up to give Century a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, touching in 1:27.85. Fargo Davies finished second in 1:29.76, and Mandan rounded out the top three with a time of 1:31.62.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Gerald Brown of Minot won in 52.15. Bueling was second in 54.29 and was followed by Mandan’s Reed Bergman, who posted a time of 55.31.

Century had a huge showing in the 100-yard breaststroke, taking the top four spots of the race. Alme touched first with a time of 58.01, just ahead of Ethan Porter’s 58.21. Eric Bergson took third in 1:00.87.

Bjellum finished his day with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. He teamed up with Bergstrom, Massimo Sassi and Hollingsworth to win 3:13.65. Minot followed with a time of 3:15.64, and Forgo Davies touched third in 3:16.71.

The meet was held at the Bismarck Aquatic Center.
