Marat Almatdinov Breaks Into Top 10 in 200 Breast at Russian Cup

RUZA, Russia, July 27. MARAT Almatdinov had a special swim ready for the crowd in the men’s 200-meter breast during the final day of the Russian Cup in Ruza.

Almatdinov put himself into the European conversation in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke with a winning time of 2:09.77. That effort shot him up to ninth in the SwimVortex world rankings. He swam mostly by himself with Mikhail Dorinov touching second in 2:11.99. Ilya Khomenko earned third overall in 2:13.36.

Veronika Popova scorched the women’s 200-meter freestyle finale with a 1:56.93. That effort was a second off her sixth-ranked 1:55.93 from Russian Nationals, but still is one of the top swims in the world this year. Viktoria Andreeva finished second in 1:58.11 with Victoria Malyutina picking up third in 1:59.69.

Elizaveta Bazarova moved up to a 15th-ranked tie with Dorothea Brandt in the women’s 50-meter free with a 24.82, while Rosalia Nasretdinova could not replicate her 19th-ranked 24.95 from Russian Nationals as she took silver tonight in 24.97. Svetlana Knyaginina raced to third in 25.57, while Popova finished off a freestyle double with a fourth-place 25.60. Bazarova’s swim beat Nasretdinova’s national record of 24.95 in the process.

Vitalina Simonova checked in with a 2:13.19 to win the women’s 200-meter IM, while Ekaterina Andreeva finished second in 2:15.74. Yana Martynova wound up settling for third-place honors with a 2:17.96. Alexander Tikhonov snared the men’s 200-meter IM title in 2:00.39 with Semen Makovich placing second in 2:01.57. Sergey Kashpersky rounded out the top three in 2:01.84.

Alexandra Papusha held off a hard-charging Yulia Larina in the women’s 200-meter back, 2:13.30 to 2:13.64. Kristina Vershinina finished third in the event with a 2:13.95. Vladislav Seryi topped the men’s 50-meter fly in 23.77, whiel Evgeny Koptelov took second in 23.86. Roman Rybin placed third in 24.01.
