Katinka Hosszu Runs National Title Tally to Four With Two More Victories

DEBRECEN, Hungary, July 17. THE Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu, who is swimming in every single event here at Hungarian Nationals, and has made it through to all semis and finals thus far, has now won four individual national titles in two days.

After making the finale in the women’s 50-meter fly in semis, Hosszu raced her way to a third meet title as she clocked a 54.97 in the women’s 100-mete free. Italy’s Erika Ferraioli finished second in 55.16 with Silvia Di Pietro placing third in 55.87 for Italy as well. Hosszu then took second in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke to Anna Sztankovics, 2:28.19 to 2:31.53, with Dalma Sebestyen finishing third in 2:32.83. That’s Hosszu’s first silver of the meet as she had three golds, a silver and a bronze following the longer distance breaststroke event.

Hosszu, who ranks fourth in the world with a 59.64 in the women’s 100-meter back from the Charlotte stop of the Arena Grand Prix, picked up her fourth title of the meet with a 1:00.83 in the finale. Carlotte Zofkova took second in 1:01.42 with Sara Joo tying Dalma Matyasovszky for third with 1:03.42s.

Hosszu wound up taking seventh in the women’s 50-meter fly at the end of the night with a 27.91. Di Pietro won in 26.55 with Anna Dowgiert (26.86) and Evelyn Verraszto (26.90) took second and third in the sprint fly finale.

Peter Bernek bettered his seventh-ranked season best of 1:56.79 from the Budapest Open with a winning time of 1:56.42 tonight in the men’s 200-meter back. Poland’s Radoslaw Kawecki pushed him the entire way with a second-place effort of 1:56.45. He now stands eighth in the world right behind Bernek. Gabor Balog snagged third in 1:57.79.

Laszlo Cseh just missed the top 20 in the world in the men’s 100-meter fly with a 52.43 for the win. Jayden Hadler, Evgeny Koptelov and Pawel Korzeniowski hold that time with matching 52.33s. Bence Pulai took second tonight in 52.69 with Michal Poprawa placing third in 53.73.

Daniel Gyurta won the men’s 100-meter breaststroke by almost a second with a 1:00.53. That swim is a bit off his 10th-ranked season best of 1:00.32 from the Sette Colli Trophy meet in Rome earlier this summer. Andrea Toniato took second in 1:01.35 with Gabor Financsek earning third in 1:02.17.

Kristztian Takacs held off Kristian Gkolomeev in the men’s 50-meter free finale, 22.23 to 22.36. Dominik Kozma, meanwhile, checked in with a third-place effort of 22.54.

Yesterday, Gergely Gyurta raced to sixth in the world in the men’s 800-meter freestyle with a 7:51.90, while Gergo Kis took second in 7:58.35. Gregorio Paltrinieri, the man who has the second-best time this year with a 7:43.01 from Italian Nationals, took third in 8:00.01.

Today, Kis fired back in the men’s 400-meter free with a 3:50.45 to 3:51.95 win against Gyurta. Patrik Rakos rounded out the top three in the event with a 3:54.71.
