9 Candidates Now in Play for FINA World Short Course Championships Hosting Duties in 2018, 2020

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, May 14. POTENTIAL bidders to the organisation of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) and FINA World Aquatics Convention in 2018 and 2020 gathered on May 13, 2014 in Lausanne (SUI) for an information meeting on the bidding procedure for these two events.

Cities/National Federations of Astana (KAZ), Copenhagen (DEN), Hangzhou (CHN), Tokyo (JPN), Russia and United Arab Emirates were briefed on the benefit, economic impact and legacy generated with the organisation of the Championships and Convention, to be staged in the first two weeks in December 2018 and 2020. Other potential organisers that could not be present in Lausanne include the cities/NF of Lima (PER), Valencia (ESP) and New Zealand.

“We want these events to be an unforgettable experience for you, which will both enhance the image of Aquatics, but also raise the profile of your city”, considered Mr. Cornel Marculescu, FINA Executive Director. “The joint organisation of the Championships and of the Convention is certainly complex and challenging, but the overall impact and added value they provide is well worth the effort”, added Mr. Marculescu.

The meeting was also attended by FINA’s Marketing Agent Dentsu, and some FINA partners and suppliers, namely Myrtha Pool, Omega, and Nüssli. Moreover, the previous organisers of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in 2012 in the city of Istanbul (TUR) were also in Lausanne to provide a valuable insight on the main aspects related to the staging of this major FINA event.

After this meeting, potential organisers will have to submit their formal bid by September 4, 2014. Finally, on December 2, 2014 FINA will announce the organisation of these events after the presentation of each bid to the FINA Bureau.

The upcoming two editions of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) and FINA World Aquatics Convention will take place in 2014 in Doha (QAT) and in 2016 in Windsor (CAN).
