Mireia Belmonte Garcia Keeps Steamrolling Spanish Open Short Course Championships

CASTELLON, Spain, November 30. MIREIA Belmonte Garcia continued her remarkable performances at the Spanish Open Short Course Championships. The meet is taking place throughout six timed final sessions.

After a world record in the 1500 free on day one, following by a 200 fly/400 IM double this morning, Belmonte Garcia returned tonight with a 3:58.45 to win the women’s 400-meter free. That swim demolished the meet record of 4:00.19 set by Melani Costa Schmid in 2011, and fell a few seconds back of Belmonte Garcia’s world record of 3:54.52 from the Berlin stop of the FINA World Cup. Costa Schmid placed second in 4:02.23, while Beatriz Gomez Cortes took third in 4:04.92.

Costa Schmid returned in the women’s 200-meter back with a 2:05.66 to 2:05.69 touchout triumph ahead of Duane Da Rocha Marce. Africa Zamorano Sanz took third in 2:09.21 to put up a junior record at the meet.

Miguel Ozeki just missed the meet record with a winning time of 21.67 in the men’s 50 free. That swim came up short of Bart Kizierowski’s 2008 meet mark of 21.57. B.K. Ozeki placed second in 22.08, while Aitor Martinez Rodriguez stopped the clock in 22.13 for third.

Marc Sanchez Torrens cruised to victory in the men’s 400 IM with a 4:11.82, while G. Sanchez Gutierrez-Cabello placed second in 4:14.97. Alejandro Garcia Martin wound up third in 4:15.29. A. Manancas Da Silva clinched the men’s 200 back title in 1:57.79, while Alvaro Lopez Conde took second in 1:59.40. Matt McManemy Barrera captured third in 2:00.38.
