Mireia Belmonte Garcia Follows World Record With Difficult Double in Spain

CASTELLAN, Spain, November 30. MIREIA Belmonte Garcia, fresh off her world record in the 1500 free yesterday, powered her way to an impressive double victory this morning at the timed final Spanish Open Short Course Championships.

She opened with the women’s 200 fly victory in 2:05.10 this morning. That swim was just a second off her fourth-ranked 2:04.20 from the Beijing stop of the FINA World Cup. Judit Ignacio Sorribes placed a distant second in 2:07.47, while Lara Grangeon finished third in 2:10.19.

Belmonte then doubled up with a 4:30.01 to win the women’s 400 IM. That’s well off her second-ranked 4:25.23 from the Beijing World Cup stop, but plenty enough to earn a double this morning. Beatriz Gomez Cortes took second in 4:35.91, while Maria Vilas Vidal pocketed third in 4:36.34.

Carlos Peralta Gallego cruised to the win in the men’s 200 fly. He clocked a 1:56.11 to beat training partner Pedro Terres Illescas. Illescas had a hard-fought battle to take second place, clocking a 1:58.84 to beat Javier Rivas Gallego (1:58.86) to the wall.

Fatima Gallardo Carapeto raced to the win in the women’s 50 free with a 25.49. Lidon Munoz Del Campo touched second in 25.57, while Mercedes Peris Mingquet picked up third-place honors in 25.63.
