Erik Persson Dashes Decade-Old Swedish Record in 200 Breast

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, November 22. THE Swedish short course championships are underway in Gothenburg, and a decade-old mark has already fallen by the wayside.

Erik Persson eclipsed the Swedish record in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:07.07. That swim took half-a-second off Martin Gustavsson’s record of 2:07.66 set 10 years ago in March of 2003 at this very meet. Simon Sjodin took a distant second in the finale with a 2:10.10.

Meanwhile, Sjodin took a second off his meet record in the men’s 200-meter IM with a time of 1:56.04. That swim smashed his 1:57.02 from a year ago in the event. Persson also took third in the event with a 1:59.06 after earlier setting the 200 breast national mark. He then took third in the 100 breastwtih a 1:00.61.

Sarah Sjostrom, fresh off the FINA World Cup circuit, has had a strong meet thus far as well. She blazed to a 56.54 to win the 100 fly, then returned with a 25.35 to capture the title in the 50 fly as well.
