Chinese Nationals Concludes With Distance Events, 50 Free and Relays

HUANGSHAN, China, October 29. WITH Ye Shiwen swimming off events, and Sun Yang not showing up at all, the times at the Chinese nationals ended with a slight whimper instead of a bang.

With Ye not swimming the 400 IM, her world record event, Wang Xinya took the victory in 4:48.26, which does not crack the top 100 global rankings. Wel back in second was Shi Yu with a 4:51.83, and Chen Ziyi was right behind with a 4:52.48.

After two second-place finishes earlier in the meet, Suo Ran was able to notch her first victory with a 25.69 representing the Chinese Navy. Second place went to Shanghai’s Yin Fan with a 25.73, and Wu Yue of Zhejiang was third with a 25.76.

Xie Zhi, the national record holder in the 100 breast, swept the breaststroke events with a 2:15.07 to win the 200 distance. Xie’s best time of the year still stands at a 2:13.63 from April’s nationals. Yan Zibei was second with a 2:15.52, and Zhang Zhihao took third with a 2:17.94.

Also taking wins on the final day were: Liaoning’s Ban Bao in the men’s 50 free with a 22.84; Bi Yirong of Zhejiang with an 8:36.01 in the women’s 800 freestyle; and He Tianqi of Zhejiang in the men’s 400 free with a 3:50.77.

Zhejiang took the women’s and men’s 400 medley relays to round out the meet. The women’s team posted a 4:06.67, while the men were victorious with a 3:38.79. The men’s time is notable because it is not far from the top time posted by a Chinese foursome last January at the Super Series meet in Australia. The previous top relay time was 3:35.95 from the world championships, which was good enough for 10th place.
