Ning Zetao, Ye Shiwen, Fu Yuanhui Among Top Names on Day Two of Chinese Nationals

HUANGSHAN, China, October 26. PLENTY of fairly strong swims went into the books at the Chinese National Championships as swimmers began to close out what has been an extremely busy long course season for the Chinese.

As previously detailed, this meet is not featuring all of the top swimmers in China as many have bypassed the event after putting up their best swims at the World Championships as well as the Chinese National Games. This includes Chinese superstar Sun Yang taking this meet off.

Mao Feilian topped the men’s 200-meter freestyle finale in 1:48.20. He just touched out Qian Zhiyong, who placed second in 1:48.46. He Tianqi finished third in 1:50.52.

He Yuzhe dominated the women’s 200-meter IM with Ye Shiwen electing to compete in mostly off events this week. He clocked a 2:14.73 for the win. Bi Yirong placed second in 2:16.03, while Chen Jie wound up third in 2:16.52.

Ning Zetao, who burst onto the international scene this year by capturing Asian records in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events, crushed the men’s 50-meter fly finale with a 24.13. Deng Zeyang touched well behind with a second-place 24.63, while Jin Yuli placed third in 24.84.

Fu Yuanhui, who tops the rankings this year with a 27.22 from the Chinese National Games, easily won the women’s 50-meter back in 27.92 this evening. Cheng Haihua finished second I 28.53, while Wang Ruiqi took third in 28.62.

Xu Jiayu obliterated the field in the men’s 200-meter back with a 1:57.78. That’s a second off his ninth-ranked time of 1:56.42 from World Championships in Barcelona. Li Guangyuan finished second in 2:00.80, while Shi Yi earned third in 2:01.21.

In a sign that swimmers across the globe face the same issues with mainstream media not fully understanding the sport, much of the local Chinese media focused on the fact that Ye finished ninth in the 50-meter fly with a 28.08 in prelims to miss the finale. Big headlines like “Ye Shiwen Fails in 50m Butterfly” appeared, similar to if Michael Phelps or Ryan Lochte would miss finals in a breaststroke event here in the United States.

“It’s not my strong event,” Ye told Xinhua who pushed the point regarding “failing” in an off event. “My coach and I want to have a try in other events so the result today won’t affect my mood.”

A much more accomplished sprint flier Sun Mengyue went on to win the finale in 26.93. Suo Ran took second in 27.31, while Liu Lan earned third in 27.32.

Ye returned this evening to help Zhejiang win the women’s 800-meter free relay with an 8:05.13. Jiangsu took second in 8:08.35, while Chinese Navy claimed third in 8:08.42.
