Kyle Chalmers Cracks 50 Seconds in 100 Free at Aussie State Teams Short Course Champs

CANBERRA, Australia, September 21. KYLE Chalmers blasted the 14-15 boys age group record at the Australian State Teams Short Course Championships today in Canberra.

Chalmers, a 15-year-old budding sprint star, raced his way into the record books with a 49.45 in the 100-meter freestyle. That swim blasted the meet record of 50.15 previously held by Te Haumi Maxwell since 2009. Chalmers captured the win ahead of Vincent Dai (50.56) and Benno Negri (50.70).

In total, seven more meet records tumbled today with a total of 14 so far in just two days of action in Canberra as the youth of Australia is showing the world what is to come from Down Under by the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Queensland’s Dominic Richardson twice lowered the boys 16-17 200-meter fly record, ending the night with a 1:57.55 for the win. Joachim Bardrum (1:58.68) and Hamish McDougall (2:00.77) placed second and third in the event. Nicholas Groenewald followed in the boys 16-17 200-meter backstroke with a 1:56.07 for the meet record in that event.

The girls also got into the meet-record action as Lucy Soden posted a 1:00.33 in the girls 15-16 100-meter backstroke to end the night with the meet mark. Sophie Taylor (1:01.44) and Amy Forrester (1:01.79) finished a second behind her. Meanwhile, Calypso Sheridan picked up the girls 13-14 200-meter breaststroke mark with a 2:28.31.

Western Australia’s James Hansford, Alex Milligan, Jackson Govers and Braga Verhage combined for a 3:47.28 to set the boys 14-15 400 medley relay meet record, while the Queensland quartet of Jazmine Wildin-Snedden, Lizzie Gannon, Amy Forrester and Chelsea Gillett snared the meet record in the girls 14-15 400 medley relay with a 3:40.86.
