Estonian Olympian Triin Aljand Retires from Swimming

TALLINN, Estonia, September 19. FOLLOWING an epic career where she put Estonian swimming on the international map, Triin Aljand has elected to retire from the sport to pursue a career in coaching.

“The decision did not come easily,” Aljand said in a press conference today. “Considering that in the last few years I have had very many injuries, I arrived at an understanding that my body can no longer tolerate it [professional sport].”

Aljand recently has had two separate operations on her feet, according to Estonian Public Broadcasting.

Aljand retires as a three-time Olympian, having competed in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics for Estonia. Her top career performance is a silver medal from the 2012 European Championships in Debrecen, where she collected second-place honors in the 50-meter fly.

Aljand competed collegiately for Texas A&M University, where she was a standout swimmer in what was a movement that moved the Aggies into national-title contender status with the likes of Julia Wilkinson and Alia Atkinson.

Aljand will now move to Turkey to being the next evolution of her career as a coach.
