Former World Record Holder Annamay Pierse Takes Assistant Position at Oakville Aquatics

OAKVILLE, Ontario, Canada, September 17. IT’s been a busy 24 hours for Oakville Aquatics in Ontario, Canada. Last night, the team’s IM stud Evan White committed to Michigan in the Class of 2014.

Head coach Sean Baker has informed Swimming World that former world-record holder Annamay Pierse has joined the coaching staff at Oakville this morning. She will be coaching Oakville’s 12-and-under developmental group.

“The Oakville Aquatic Club is proud to announce the addition of former world record holder Annamay Pierse to the coaching staff,” Baker said.

Aside from her incredible former world-record swim, Pierse’s top international performance is a silver in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2009 FINA World Championships. Her world record in the event stood for nearly three years before Rebecca Soni undercut the time at the 2012 London Olympics.

Swimming is ingrained in Pierse’s DNA. She is the oldest of five sisters, who all are competitive swimmers. She also has two brothers, in what is a large family. This type of swimming background can only help lead to Pierse turning into a phenomenal coach.

Pierse’s hiring another feather in the cap of Oakville, which happens to be making some serious noise in Canada right now. She joins fellow Olympians Melanie MacKay (1976) and Laura Nichols (1996, 2000) on what is becoming a stacked coaching staff.

This summer, Oakville became one of the very few non-university-affiliated swim teams in Canada to win the overall team championship at Canadian Senior Nationals in Montreal. Oakville compiled 707 points, winning by a comfortable margin ahead of Edmonton Keyano’s 536.5 points.
