Swimming World’s Throwback Thursday Video: Hosszu Earns First World Title

PHOENIX, Arizona, August 22. TODAY in the Seychelles Islands just east of Kenya, Katinka Hosszu and Shane Tusup were wed in front of family and friends after years of dating that stretched back to their time together as swimmers at the University of Southern California.

The two have seen many ups and downs, but are now sharing the sweet smell of success from the world championships in Barcelona, where Hosszu claimed gold in both individual medley events and bronze in the 200 butterfly. Today’s wedding comes during the break in competition in the FINA World Cup series, where Hosszu is aiming to defend her women’s overall title.

Hosszu did not come out of nowhere to win in Spain. In 2009, she won the 400 IM at the Rome championships, taking down the reigning Olympic gold and silver medalists. Hosszu’s main challenge came from Kirsty Coventry, who had won silver in the Beijing Olympics and was looking to upgrade to gold in Rome. But Hosszu was able to overtake Coventry in the final 50 meters to claim her first world title.

In the Throwback Thursday video below, Hosszu is in lane three, third from the top of the screen. Coventry is in lane one, and Olympic champion Stephanie Rice is in lane four. Also in the race was Elizabeth Beisel, who would win the 2011 world 400 IM title, in lane five.
