KAZAN, Russia, July 9. VLADIMIR Morozov is one of several Russian swimmers using this week's World University Games as a final test before the world championships.

Morozov, the second-ranked swimmer in the world in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 50 free, will swim those events in Kazan as well as the 50 back and 50 breast. He's also scheduled to help Russia in the 400 free relay. The three compatriots who teamed with Morozov to help Russia secure bronze in the relay at the Olympics last year -- Andrey Grechin, Danila Izotov and Nikita Lobintsev -- will also race in Kazan, though Morozov is the only one of those swimmers on the list for the 400 free relay this week. Official race lineups list Alexander Sukhorukov, Sergey Fesikov and Evgeny Lagunov as the other three set for the sprint free relay.

Yulia Efimova will be racing for medals in all three breaststroke events in Kazan and Barcelona, and Viatcheslav Sinkevich, currently ranked third in the world in the 200 breast, will swim the 100 and 200 breaststrokes in Kazan.

Anastasia Zueva, the reigning world champion in the 50 backstroke, will race in Kazan in the leadup to a defense of her world championship crown. Though Zueva won silver in the 200 back last year in London, she has backed off the longer backstroke race, citing a long recovery from foot injury last fall.

With the World University Games set in their home country, it should come as no surprise that the Russians are allowing most of their world championship squad the opportunity to race in a high-profile meet before the world championships. No other country is bringing so many athletes on their world championship rosters to Russia for pre-worlds preparation. Among the high-profile swimming countries, only the United States is allowing some world championship swimmers to race at the World University Games, giving Megan Romano and Chelsea Chenault the opportunity to get in more races before being called for relay duty in Barcelona.
