Ryan Lochte Obliterates Meet Record at Mel Zajac Jr. International

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 25. DURING the second evening of the Mel Zajac Jr. International Meet, Olympic star Ryan Lochte smashed the meet record in the men's 200-meter IM after a double last night.

Lochte, serving as the centerpiece of the meet this weekend, opened the night by finishing second in the men's 50-meter backstroke with a 26.52 after picking up wins in the 200-meter backstroke and freestyle events last night. Gleb Suvurov won the sprint backstroke with a time of 26.39, while Russell Wood earned third in 26.62.

Lochte then returned in the men's 200-meter IM with a vengeance, crushing the meet record with a 2:00.15. That swim smashed the 2:01.73 standard set by Mitchell Larkin a year ago. Bogdan Knezevic finished well back in second with a 2:06.53, while Suvurov wound up third in 2:06.66.

In an extremely close contest, 14-year-old Ingrid Wilm touched out Hannah Weiss by the slimmest of margins, 29.58 to 29.59, in the women's 50-meter back. Lauren Lavigna rounded out the podium with a third-place 29.82.

Tianna Rissling posted a 2:17.30 to win the women's 200-meter IM, while Rachel Millet touched out 15-year-old Lili Margitai, 2:21.15 to 2:21.27, for second-place in the finale.

Noemie Thomas opened the night with a 58.78 to win the women's 100-meter fly going away. Her closest competition proved to be 15-year-old Lili Margitai and 17-year-old Hannah Weiss, who tied for second with matching 1:02.09s. Thomas nearly cleared Dana Vollmer's 2010 meet record of 58.59. Coleman Allen took home the men's 100-meter fly crown in 54.71 after topping the preliminary heats with a 54.71. Logan Rysemus (56.19) and Rohan Jacobs (56.40) finished second and third. Notably, Brad deBorde smoked a 56.04 to win the B final.

Brittany MacLean dominated the women's 400-meter freestyle with a 4:13.32, while Jessica Thielmann placed second in 4:16.29. Lindsay Delmar wound up third in 4:17.30 with Club Wolverine's Emily Brunemann taking fourth in 4:17.82. Jeremy Bagshaw posted a seven-second triumph in the men's 400-meter free with a 3:53.56. Kier Maitland (4:00.16) and Sean Penhale (4:03.27) completed the top three.

Natalie Hinds surged to victory in the women's 50-meter free with a 25.87. Ash Sutherland picked up second in 26.57, while Paige Kremer wound up third in 26.61. In a fun-filled men's splash-and-dash, Luke Peddie and deBorde deadheated in the men's 50-meter free with 23.67s. David Hibberd finished third in 23.73.

Tera Van Beilen turned in a 2:29.51 to capture the women's 200-meter breaststroke title. Fiona Doyle (2:30.26) and Kierra Smith (2:32.78) completed the top three. Andrew Poznikoff clipped Ashton Baumann, 2:18.44 to 2:18.62, in the men's 200-meter breast. Nick Kostiuk touched third in 2:19.05.
