Jeremy Stravius Runs World Slate to Eight; Camille Muffat Dominates

RENNES, France, April 14. THE French Nationals came to a close with Jeremy Stravius running his total slate of swims at the Barcelona World Championships to eight, while plenty other swift swims also occurred.

Stravius continued his monster meet with a fourth gold as he rushed to a 52.04 to win the men's 100-meter fly. That performance jumped him ahead of Zhou Jiawei's world-leading effort of 52.11 from the Chinese Nationals earlier this month. Mehdy Metella took second in 52.48, while Spain's Rafael Munoz Perez claimed third-place honors in 52.79 in what proved to be a swift heat.

Stravius then secured his fifth individual swim in Barcelona with a runner-up finish to Yannick Agnel, 1:45.48 to 1:45.61, in the men's 200-meter free. Gregory Mallet (1:46.69) and William Meynard (1:49.53) finished third and fourth in the championship finale.

After throwing down the first 1:55 in the world this year during semifinals last night, Camille Muffat lowered her world-leading time with a 1:55.48 for the women's 200-meter freestyle victory, earning her third individual swim at the Barcelona World Championships. Charlotte Bonnet (1:57.36), Coralie Balmy (1:58.35) and Isabelle Mabboux (1:59.32) rounded out the top four all under 2:00.

Denmark's Lotte Friis threw down a strong 16:04.72 to win the women's 1500-meter freestyle. While not under her goal of 16:00 as she already has a world-leading time of 16:01.41 from the Golden Circuit League meet in Amiens, France last month, it still stands as the second-fastest time of the year. France's Aurelie Muller touched well back in second with a 16:39.07, while Morgane Rothon claimed third in 16:46.41.

Ben Stasiulis touched out Eric Ress for the men's 200-meter backstroke title, 1:59.16 to 1:59.26, with both men missing selection to the French World Championships squad. Florian Joly took third in 2:02.33.

Damien Joly of Olympic Nice cleared 8:00 to win the men's 800-meter freestyle in 7:58.99. AAS Sarcelles' Benoit Debast finished second in 8:00.48, while Tunisia's Ahmed Mathlouthi took third in 8:02.55.

Giacomo Perez Dortona topped the men's 50-meter breaststroke in 27.77, while Great Britain's Joseph Welstead took second in 28.26. Maxime Bussiere clinched third in 28.51. Anna Santamans hit the wall in 25.37 to win the women's 50-meter free. Hungary's Eszter Dara finished second in 25.83, while Margaux Fabre earned third in 25.87.

Hungary's Evelyn Verraszto kept on rolling at the meet with another strong swim, this time prevailing in the women's 400-meter IM with a 4:38.50. Fantine Lesaffre of France took second in 4:49.13, while Adeline Martin wound up third in 4:50.83.
