Swimming Australia Conducting Review of their Elite Swimming Culture

SYDNEY, Australia, November 13. SWIMMING Australia chief Barclay Nettlefold announced Tuesday that parallel to the ongoing review of the Australia's poor performance at the London Olympics, an independent review will be conducted investigating the culture of the sport at the elite level.

At the 2012 London Olympics, Swimming Australia produced their lowest number of medals since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. They came away with a single gold, six silvers and three bronze medals. The total medal count was a disappointment, to put it mildly, considering Australia is consistently hailed as a dominant nation in the sport of swimming.

In their post-Olympic review, Swimming Australia uncovered rumors that its members conducted initiation pranks involving sleeping pills prior to the London Olympics. Their actions were called into question, and further considered as reasoning for their poor performance at the Games.

Nettlefold announced that Dr. Pippa Grange of the Consultancy firm Bluestone Edge would lead the investigation into the elite culture of Swimming Australia.

“Dr Grange and her team have been engaged in similar work with elite sporting teams and corporate organisations, with demonstrated success,” said Nettlefold. “The work will cover our swimmers, coaches, our executive management group and the board.”

“The focus of our work will be on making recommendations that can help build a sound, sustainable culture that focuses on athlete and organisational wellbeing,” said Dr Grange.

The culture review is being commissioned by Swimming Australia, in consultation with the Australian Swimmers' Association (ASA), parallel to a broader post-Olympic review already being conducted by the Independent Swimming Review Panel. The culture review is expected to be completed by February of 2013.
