African Long Course Championships: Myles Brown Set to Sweep Freestyle Events

NAIROBI, Kenya, September 14. SOUTH Africa nearly swept all the gold medals today at the African Senior long course championships, taking five of the six events offered today.

Myles Brown of South Africa is in line to sweep all the freestyle events at the meet. With wins already in the 100, 200 and 800, Brown added the 400 free to his gold medal tally today with a time of 3:57.59, falling short of countryman Troy Prinsloo's meet record of 3:57.30. Brown will likely contest the 1500 free on Saturday and the 50 free on Sunday.

Brown returned later today to help South Africa win the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:30.52, ahead of Egypt (3:31.09) and Algeria (3:31.45).

Mandy Loots and Rene Warnes gave South Africa a 1-2 finish in the session's opening event, the women's 100 butterfly. Loots took gold with a time of 1:00.64, and Warnes was second with a 1:03.40. Algeria's Fella Bennaceur placed third in 1:04.39.

Tara Nicholas earned a gold medal in the women's 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.47. Egypt collected silver and bronze, with Mai Abdelfatta swimming a 1:13.26 and Rowida Mohamed Tolba placing third in 1:14.99.

Melissa Corfe won the fifth gold for the Springboks, earning the win in the women's 800 free with an 8:50.45, breaking the meet record of 8:53.78 in the process. Her teammate Kyna Pereira took silver with a 9:05.77, and Egypt's Reem Hussein took the bronze with a 9:16.70.

Taki Mrabet of Tunisia won the men's 200 breaststroke. Full results of the event were not immediately available.
