Canadian Summer Nationals: Vancouver Dolphins Extend Lead in Team Race, Dominique Bouchard Gets Second Victory

EDMONTON, Canada, July 20. THE Vancouver Dolphins continued to pile on the points, while backstroker Dominique Bouchard earned her second win of the meet tonight.

The second night of finals at the Edmonton Kinsmen Sport Centre got underway with an exciting sprint finish in the women's 100m free. PPO's Sandrine Mainville and Manta's Chantal VanLandeghem turned in matching 26.69s at the 50m mark before VanLandeghem pulled away at the very end to win in 55.20. Mainville finished in 55.66, while Guelph Marlins' Chantique Payne swam a 56.30 for third. Etobicoke's Hassaan Abdel-Khalik, winner of the 200m free last night, added the 100m free to his credit with a touch-out victory over several others. Abdel-Khalik swam a 50.91 to top Olympian Swim Club's Luke Peddie and Vancouver Dolphins' Kelly Aspinall, who tied for second in 50.98.

After turning third at the halfway point, Pointe-Claire's Ashley McGregor turned up the jets on the final length to win the women's 100m breast in 1:08.87. Kierra Smith of Liquid Lightning hung on for second in 1:09.02, followed closely by LA Swim Club's Rachel Nicol (1:09.12). The men's 100m breast went to Keyano's Richard Funk, who touched in 1::01.42 to win comfortably over Toronto's Warren Barnes (1:02.18) and University of Calgary's Jason Block (1:02.32).

Greater Ottawa Kingfish's Erika Seltenreich-Hodson used a strong breaststroke leg to leave her competitors behind and post the top time of 4:44.55 in the women's 400m IM. Manta's Breanne Siwicki led the race through the butterfly and backstroke legs before fading to second in 4:46.79. Genevieve Canton of Rouge Et Or finished a distant third in 4:51.83. Meanwhile, Vancouver's Luke Reilly made up a full second on Liquid Lightning's David Dimitrov on the last length of the men's 400m IM to win in 4:23.75. Dimitrov finished shortly after in 4:24.06, with Oakville's Mack Darragh in third (4:26.78).

Two sprint events wrapped up the individual events on tonight's schedule. Dominique Bouchard of the North Bay Titans stroked her way to the fastest time in the women's 50m back, a 29.26. Chantal VanLandeghem earned her second trip to the podium of the night with a 29.47, while Cascade's Brooklyn Snodgrass took third in 29.56. Brothers Matthew and Jeffrey Swanston, both representing the Newmarket Stingrays, raced to a 1-2 finish in the men's event, with times of 25.88 and 26.12, respectively. Omar Mahmoud Arafa of Oakville came in third with a time of 26.26.

In relay action, Club Aquatique Montreal claimed the women's 800m free relay in 8:21.37 behind four solid swims from Emilie Belleau, Sarah-Lee Hevey, Frederique Cigna and Ariane Mainville. Island Swimming's foursome of Jeremy Bagshaw, Stefan Hirniak, Keegan Zanatta and Peter Brothers dominated the men's race, winning by almost 10 seconds in 7:24.87.
