Zhang Lin Well Off FINA A Cut in Men’s 400 Free at Chinese Youth Championships

BEIJING, China, May 22. JUST a day after missing the FINA A cut in the men's 200 free, Zhang Lin finished nearly eight seconds off the men's 400 free automatic qualifying mark at the Chinese Youth Championships.

Zhang, the reigning Olympic silver medalist in the event, topped the men's 400 free with a 3:56.32 clocking, well off the FINA A cut of 3:48.92. This comes after he posted a 1:49.50 in the men's 200 free, missing the FINA A cut of 1:47.82 yesterday.

Zhang's last chance will be in the men's 100 free, where he will have to clear 48.82 to make the Olympic team. The local media has already begun stating that Zhang's Olympic chances are done.

China had been looking for Zhang to earn an Olympic bid in hopes of strengthening its men's 800 free relay. He was allowed a spot at the Chinese Youth Championships to make the attempt, and with all eyes in the crowd on him, he was unable to do so.
