Passages: Australian Gold Medalist Murray Rose, 73

SYDNEY, Australia, April 15. MURRAY Rose, a four-time Olympic gold medalist for Australia, passed away this morning after a fight with leukemia. Rose won three gold medals in the 400 and 1500 free as well as the 800 free relay for Australia at the 1956 Melbourne Games before capturing gold in the 400 free at the 1960 Rome Games. He also won silver (1500 free) and bronze (800 free relay) in Rome.

Rose also trained at the University of Southern California before graduating from USC in 1962. He also went on to set 15 world records, including the 800-meter freestyle in 1962 that stood for four years. After completing his competitive career, Rose continued in the sport in Masters swimming.

“The name Murray Rose is synonymous with success in the sport of swimming, and his achievements in Melbourne in 1956 will go down as the stuff of legend,” Swimming Australia president David Urquhart said. “Murray Rose is part of the Swimming DNA in this country. His success inspired a generation and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and close friends during this difficult time.”
