Hungarian National Championships: Peter Bernek Scorches 200 Back

DEBRECEN, Hungary, March 30. AMONG a handful of world-ranked efforts, Peter Bernek's third-ranked performance in the men's 200 back stood out at the Hungarian National Championships.

Peter Bernek blazed the men's 200 back with a 1:57.10. That effort stands behind only Ryosuke Irie (1:54.02) and Ben Stasiulis (1:56.39) in the world rankings as the third-fastest this year. Gabor Balog took second in 1:59.44 for 23rd in the world rankings, while Chad Le Clos touched third in 2:02.21.

Eva Risztov posted an 8:31.09 to win the women's 800 free, and move to 16th in the world rankings. Boglarka Kapas (8:37.71) and Nikoletta Kiss (8:42.66) finished second and third. Laszlo Cseh claimed the men's 100 fly title in 52.57 for 19th in the world rankings. Chad Le Clos finished a close second with a 52.86, while Bence Biczo earned third in 53.60.

Krisztian Takacs won the men's 50 free in 22.31 for 20th in the world rankings. Norbert Trandafir (22.47) and Dominik Kozma (22.62) finished second and third. Daniel Gyurta topped the men's 100 breast in 1:01.22, well short of his seventh-ranked season best of 1:00.43 from Antwerp in January. Gabor Financsek finished second in 1:02.05, while Dragos Agache took third in 1:03.61.

Eszter Dara claimed the women's 50 fly in 27.48, while Zsuzsanna Jakabos took second in 27.66. Liliana Szilagyi picked up third in 27.74. Evelyn Verraszto won the women's 100 free in 55.66. Agnes Mutina (56.37) and Dara (56.60) placed second and third. Jakobos touched out Verrastzo, 1:03.15 to 1:03.23, for the women's 100 back title. Evelyn Lukacs finished third in 1:03.94.

Ronwyn Roper edged Tanja Smid, 2:29.04 to 2:29.14, in the women's 200 breast. Jakabos continued her podium performances with a third-place time of 2:33.27. Gergo Kis snared the men's 400 free title in 3:50.93. Gergely Gyurta (3:52.62) and Bence Kiraly (3:56.27) completed the podium.
