Swiss National Championships: Alexandre Liess Lowers 200 Fly National Record

ZURICH, Switzerland, March 16. THE second day of the Swiss national championships is complete, with another national record falling as swimmers attempt to qualify for the European championships and Olympic Games.

Alexandre Liess broke his own national record in the men's 200 butterfly with a time of 1:58.63. In breaking his record of 2:00.23, he becomes the first Swiss male to break two minutes in the event. Nico van Duijn, a freshman at Georgia Tech, placed second with a 2:03.56, and Jean Rochat was third with a 2:04.92.

Olympian Dominink Meichtry opened the session with a 1:48.87 to win the men's 200 free. Second place went to David Karasek with a 1:49.61 and third place went to Jean-Baptiste Febo with a 1:51.38.

Danielle Villars won the women's 200 free in 2:02.57, holding off a late charge from Stefanie Eisnering, who was second with a 2:02.66. Well back in third was Julia Hassler with a 2:04.10.

National record holder Flori Lang won the men's 50 backstroke with a 25.49. His national record stands at 24.75. Second place went to Sven Pfeuti with a 26.75 and Elijah Stolz was third with a 27.60.

Ivana Gabrilo just missed her national record of 29.15 in the women's 50 backstroke, touching in 29.18. Melanie Schweiger was second with a 29.76, and Maria Ugolkova took third with a 29.84.

Yannick Kaser won the men's 100 breast in 1:02.23, well ahead of Martin Schweizer's second-place time of 1:03.06. Colin Bridier took third with a 1:03.24.

Stephanie Spahn won the women's 100 breast with a 1:11.26, with Jennifer Bovay placing second with a 1:13.21. Stefanie Senn took third with a 1:14.02.

In the women's 200 fly, Julia Hassler took the title with a 2:18.85. Well back in second was Annick van Westendorp with a 2:21.33, and Rachel Wuthrich was third in 2:23.99.
