Brazil Long Course Open Championships: Cesar Cielo, Felipe Silva Post Quick 50s

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, December 16. THE second day of swimming is complete at the Brazil Open Long Course Championships.

In Thursday evening's preliminaries, Cesar Cielo posted a 21.97 in the 50 freestyle, not far off his world-leading time of 21.52 from the world championships. Cielo scratched from today's final, allowing Bruno Fratus to win in 22.34. Fratus has been faster this year, with a 21.76 to his credit from the world championships semifinal, and swam a 22.16 in yesterday's prelims. Placing second in today's race was Nicholas do Santos with a 22.45, off his 22.30 from prelims. Third place went to Andre Daudt with a 22.72.

Felipe Silva won the 50 breast final in 27.01, the same time that won him the world championship in July. In prelims on Thursday evening, he swam a 26.91 to inch closer to Cameron van der Burgh's world-leading time of 26.90. Silva's time from world championships already had him ranked second in the world. Joao Gomes was second in the final with a 27.45, and Felipe Lima took third in 27.84.

Fernanda Alvarenga won the women's 200 backstroke with a 2:17.33, well ahead of Rebeca Bretanha's second-place time of 2:18.45. Third place went to Thalandra Borges with a 2:20.71.

Flavia Delaroli-Cazziolato won the women's 50 free with a 25.42, while Gracie Hermann was second in 25.58. Alessandra Marchioro was third with a 25.69.

Ana Carvalho took the women's 50 breast in 32.14, beating out Juliana Marin, who took second in 32.74. Beatriz Travalon was third with a 33.06.

Leonardo de Deus won the men's 200 backstroke in 1:58.64, just a shade off his best time of the year, a 1:58.29 from the world championships. Leonardo Santos took second in 1:59.97, while Fernando Pires was third with a 2:02.30.

Daynara Paula won the women's 100 butterfly with a 59.91, well off her best of the year, a 58.56 that ranks her 23rd in the world. Second place went to Daniele Jesus with a 1:01.20, and Dandara Antonio was third with a 1:01.33.

Henrique Martins won the men's 100 fly title in 52.68, improving on his 52.87 from prelims that had ranked him 40th in the world. Martins now stands at 35th in the world. Glauber Silva placed second in 52.92, while Thiago Pereira took third with a 53.28.

Joanna Maranhao closed out the session with a victory in the 800 free, winning with an 8:37.18. Poliana Okimoto, who has qualified to swim the 10K at the Olympics, placed second with an 8:50.46. Ana Marcela de Cunha was third with an 8:52.66.
