Dutch Open Long Course Championships: Mireia Belmont Garcia Sets Spanish Record in 800 Free; Moves Into Top 15 All Time

EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands, December 3. MIREIA Belmonte Garcia downed the Spanish record in the women's 800 free during the second day of swimming at the Dutch Open Long Course Championships held in Eindhoven.

Garcia moved to third in the world in the women's 800 free with an 8:22.78 for the win. That swim put her behind only Rebecca Adlington (8:17.51) and Lotte Friis (8:18.20), and broke the Spanish record of 8:24.08 previously owned by Erika Villaecija since 2008. She moved up to 15th in the all time rankings with the swim. Friis placed second in 8:24.31, while Grainne Murphy earned third-place honors in 8:31.14.

Michael Jamieson won the men's 200 breast in a meet-record 2:10.40. That performance clipped his 11th-ranked season best of 2:10.42 from March, and moved him into a 10th-ranked tie with Ryo Tateishi. Akos Molnar touched second in 2:12.89, while Lennart Stekelenburg snared third in 2:13.08.

Camille Lacourt dropped a 24.96 to best the meet record in the men's 50 back. His top-ranked time in the world is a 24.36 from France in March. Bastiaan Lijesen finished second in 25.17, just missing his 13th-ranked 25.04 from Eindhoven in April. Aschwin Wildeboer Faber placed third in 25.18, back from his fifth-ranked 24.82 from Worlds.

Sarah Sjostrom jumped out to a meet record in the women's 100 fly with a winning time of 57.32. That effort just missed her fourth-ranked season best of 57.29 set at Worlds this summer. Marleen Veldhuis placed second in 59.20, while Vanessa Mohr earned third in 59.43.

Femke Heemskerk topped the women's 200 free in 1:56.75. She's been faster with a 1:55.54 for second in the world this year. Sjostrom earned her second podium of the night with a 1:57.21, while Karin Prinsloo placed third in 1:58.85.

Evgeny Korotyshkin won the men's 100 fly title in a meet-record 52.11, off his eighth-ranked season best of 51.77 from Worlds. Joeri Verlinden touched second in 52.37, shy of his 10th-ranked 51.85 from Eindhoven in April. Mike Cavic rounded out the top three in 52.69, short of his 14th-ranked 52.10 also from Eindhoven in April.

Joline Hostman cleared the meet record in the women's 200 breast with a 2:26.59, while Sara Nordenstam took second in 2:28.20. Marina Garcia Urzainqui placed third in 2:28.30. Mercedes Peris Minguet posted a meet-record 28.61 to win the women's 50 back. Duane Da Roche Marce took second in 28.90, while Elena Gemo finished third in 29.22. Sebastiaan Verschuren claimed the men's 200 free title in 1:47.90, while Filippo Magnini (1:48.55) and Gregory Mallet (1:48.89) placed second and third.

In relays, Jenny Mensing, Sina Sutter, Caroline Ruhnau and Lisa Vitting won the women's 400 medley relay in 4:07.52, while Florent Manaudou, Gregory Mallet, Fabien Gilot and William Meynard claimed the men's 400 free relay in 3:20.06.
