Canada Cup: Sinead Russell, Tobias Oriwol Double

TORONTO, Ontario, November 25. THE initial evening of swimming at the Canada Cup in Toronto is in the books. The meet is long course meters at night, and short course meters during prelims.

Sinead Russell won the women's 100 free in 55.73 after setting the SCM meet record in the morning with a 54.17. Brittany MacLean took second in 55.83, while Lauren Earp earned third in 56.28. Russell doubled up with a 2:10.97 in the women's 200 back, crushing the meet record, while moving to seventh in the world in the SCM event with a 2:03.65 in the morning. MacLean clocked a 2:12.87 for second at night, while Geneview Cantin touched third in 2:13.10.

Tobias Oriwol snared the men's 200 back title in 1:58.88 after clocking a 1:58.38 SCM time during prelims. Both times are meet records. Matt Swanston finished second in 2:00.51, while Charles Boldison earned third in 2:03.67. Oriwol doubled up with a 4:23.44 to win the men's 400 IM. His preliminary swim of 4:16.67 downed the SCM meet record. Andrew Ford finished second in 4:29.99, while Mathew Allison wound up third in 4:31.46.

Richard Hortness topped the men's 100 free in 50.57 after bettering the SCM meet record with a 49.68 in prelims. Hassaan Abdel-Khalik touched second in 51.07, while Tom Miller placed third in 51.10.

Mariya Chekanovych touched out Kierra Smith, 1:09.72 to 1:09.76, for the women's 100 breast title. Erin Stamp clocked a 2:10.29 for third place. Mike Brown posted a 1:02.27 to set the men's 100 LCM breast meet record after turning in a 1:00.01 during prelims. Warren Barnes touched second in 1:02.76, while Andy Poznikoff earned third in 1:03.20.

Karyn Jewell turned in a 4:48.23 to win the women's 400 IM, while Lucy Spencer touched second in 4:49.17. Annie Harrison placed third in 4:49.43. Katerine Savard captured the women's 50 fly in 26.87, downing the LCM meet record, while Kendra Chernoff touched second in 27.46. Vanessa Charron placed third in 27.65.

In relay action, Lauren Earp, Olivia Bellio, Amanda Reason and Brittany MacLean won the women's 400 free relay in 3:47.30, while Javier Sossa, Daniel Ramirez, Mateo Maciuniak and Nick Schuttinger claimed the men's 400 free relay in 3:29.05.

Men's 50 fly results were not available.
