Chinese National City Games: Ye Shiwen Blasts 400 IM

NANCHANG, China, October 17. DURING the first day of the Chinese National City Games held in Nanchang, Ye Shiwen put on a show in the women's 400 IM with a scorching fast time.

Ye clocked a 4:33.66, standing second only to Elizabeth Beisel's 4:31.78 this year. That effort bettered Ye's 4:35.15 from Worlds in July, and clipped Ye's personal best of 4:33.79 set as the Asian Games last November. She remains 10th in the all-time rankings behind Yana Klochkova's 4:33.59 from 2000.

Ye returned later in the evening to help Hangzhou to a winning relay time of 3:43.39 in the women's 400 free relay. Wangming finished second in 3:45.02, while Shenzhen placed third in 3:45.26.

Li Xuanxu, meanwhile, finished second in the distance medley event with a 4:34.33, while Zhou Min placed third in 4:45.51. Li improved upon her sixth-ranked season best of 4:35.73 from Chinese Nationals in April to move to fifth in the world.

Li Junqi posted a 3:47.53 to win the men's 400 free, moving to 15th in the world, and ahead of Dai Jun (3:47.58) as the second-fastest man from China this year. Sun Yang owns the top-ranked time with a 3:40.29. Wang Changsha took second in 3:55.11, while Cheng Shaoqing placed third in 3:57.08.

Wang Shun captured the men's 400 IM crown in 4:14.09, well back of his fourth-ranked season best of 4:11.61 from Chinese Nationals in September. Huang Chao took second in 4:15.43, while Li Xiang finished third in 4:21.38.

In semifinal action, Li Tianhao topped the men's 100 breast in 1:03.27, while Feng Luoling (1:03.37) and Sun Chenwei (1:03.75) placed second and third.
