Australia University Games: Marieke Guehrer Finishes Meet With 10 Golds

GOLD COAST, Australia, September 29. MARIEKE Guehrer put a cap on what proved to be a remarkable three-day run at the Australia University Games.

Guehrer added her sixth individual gold medal, and eighth overall, with a 56.87 to win the women's 100 free. Jessica Morrison finished second in 57.35, while Mel Houghton took third in 58.24. Guehrer then snared her ninth medal of the meet when Melbourne's Jessica Morrison, Grace Loh, Nicolette Lyttle and Guehrer claimed the women's 200 free relay crown in 1:49.18. That swim beat the meet record of 1:52.16 set by Queensland last year. Melbourne returned in the women's 200 medley relay as Loh, Samantha Marshall, Guehrer and Morrison posted a meet-record time of 1:57.71 for Guehrer's 10th gold medal of the week. That swim bested the 2:03.73 set by Queensland in 2010.

Christian Sprenger lowered his meet record in the men's 50 breast with a 28.76. That effort eclipsed his 2009 time of 28.94. Shaun Abbott touched second in 29.48, while Chris Warren earned third in 29.95. Samantha Marshall followed suit with a meet record in the women's 50 breast. She clocked a 33.05, bettering the 33.79 set by Katherine Bigby back in 2001. Ashleigh McCleery finished second in 34.21, while Katrina Schieber took third in 34.32.

Rebecca Pegg claimed the women's 800 free title in 9:14.80, while Meagan Ramsay placed second in 9:26.75. Nicolette Lyttle picked up third-place honors in 9:38.06. Mark O'Donnell won the men's 800 free in 8:35.03. Andrew Cameron (8:40.76) and Donald Cameron (8:44.31) took second and third.

Samantha Bennett topped the women's 200 back in 2:23.05, while Rebecca Harry touched second in 2:25.29. Emily Selig wound up third in 2:26.56. Atte Liimatanien hit the wall in 2:11.77 to win the men's 200 back, while O'Donnell showed some range taking second in 2:12.40 after winning the distance free earlier. Donald Cameron also doubled with his second-straight third-place finish with a 2:15.16.

Kyle Richardson captured the men's 100 free in 50.93, while Kurt Herzog took second in 52.42. Matthew Spence placed third in 52.94. Emma Gray claimed the women's 200 fly title in 2:28.02, while Angelica Armellini placed second in 2:29.29. Su-Sim Lim wound up third in 2:37.51. Andrew Cameron pocketed the men's 200 fly crown in 2:04.81. Shane Kingsbury (2:05.53) and Stephen Parkes (2:05.85) completed the top three.

In men's relay action, Bond's Bruce McGregor, Chris Dolling, Sam Hourigan and Gene Kubala won the 200 free relay in 1:37.98, while Queensland Tech's Grant Irvine, Nicholas Schafer, Christian Sprenger and Kyle Richardson posted a 1:45.96 to win the 200 medley relay.
