BARCELONA, Spain, July 27. TEAM USA's women's water polo team is in the same position as its men's team after winning today, playing the role of spoiler as both will need to oust the host nation to continue in their respect tournaments at the FINA World Championships.

Spain blitzed New Zealand on the first day of elimination matches, 18-6, while Team USA thumped Brazil, 14-3, as the two will meet in the quarterfinals.


Spain's team captain Jennifer Pareja, who netted five goals against New Zealand, is looking forward to the battle against the reigning Olympic gold medalists.

"We have to play the perfect game against the USA and our defense will be the key to success," Pareja said. "We are attacking very well. We are ready to beat the USA."

In other action, Russia smashed South Africa (22-3); Australia blasted Uzbekistan (25-2); The Netherlands clipped China (11-10); Canada nearly doubled up Kazakhstan (14-8); Hungary downed Great Britain (14-5) and Greece edged Italy (13-12).

The quarterfinals are now set for Monday:
