BARCELONA, Spain, July 25. RUSSIA used a last-ditch effort to secure the Group A title in women's water polo at the FINA World Championships during another round of preliminary play today. Russia managed to draw a back-and-forth battle with The Netherlands to conclude the match 12-12 and lock down the Group A title.

"It was an equal and very difficult match," said Russia's top scorer Olga Beliaeva, who turned in a hat trick. "I did not like our defensive play. We need to improve in this regard for the upcoming matches."

With its wins against Uzbekistan and Spain, Russia now stands atop Group A.

Plenty of other matches took place today as well. Reigning Olympic champs USA smashed Great Britain, 16-4, to open the day with Caroline Clark netting a hat trick to lead her squad.

Meanwhile, Canada knotted up Greece (8-8); Hungary thumped Kazakhstan (18-7); Italy squashed Brazil (13-5); Australia nearly blanked South Africa (16-1); China shellacked New Zealand (13-5) and Spain blitzed Uzbekistan (20-4).
