4th FINA World Men’s Water Polo Developmental Trophy

KUWAIT City, Kuwait, May 7. IN FINA's attempt to promote the sport of water polo on a global scale, especially in places where it is not considered a major sport, 11 teams gathered in Kuwait City to compete in the fourth FINA World Men's Water Polo Development Trophy. The Kuwait Swimming Federation is hosting the event, which will take place May 6-11.

The 11 teams were divided into two groups. Group A consists of Tunisia, Egypt, Peru, Uruguay, Singapore and Saudi Arabia. In Group B are South Africa, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Uzbekistan and Kuwait. The Algerian team had to cancel at the last minute.

In the first day of Group A competition, Saudi Arabia defeated Tunisia 12-8, Uruguay was victorious over Peru 8-4 and Egypt took down Singapore 14-5. Puerto Rico's team enjoyed the biggest margin of victory so far with its 23-2 win over Guatemala in Group B action. Uzbekistan defeated South Africa 14-5 in the other Group B match. Kuwait drew a bye in this round.

Eleven referees are present with their teams, as well as three referees from neutral countries. A FINA school for water polo officials will be held in conjunction with the tournament.

Previous winners of the Trophy include Colombia (2007), Kuwait (2009) and Saudi Arabia (2011).
