USA Women’s Water Polo Defeats Italy 15-2 To Advance To Semifinals Of FINA World League Super Final

CHANGSHU, China, June 1. THE U.S. Olympic Women's Water Polo Team remained undefeated at the FINA World League Super Final, as they advanced to the semifinals with a 15-2 defeat of Italy. Maggie Steffens (Danville, CA/Stanford/Diablo) scored five goals in the win while Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, MI/Michigan/NYAC) and Tumua Anae (Newport Beach, CA/USC/SOCAL) combined for 11 saves in net. Team USA will meet Greece on Saturday in the semifinals.

For the second straight match Team USA was largely untested as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first period. They were leading 8-1 at halftime before putting the match away in the third when they again outscored Italy 5-0. In the fourth Team USA outscored the Italians 2-1 on the way to claiming the 15-2 victory. The United States went 3/7 on power plays while Greece went 2/7.

“It was another solid defensive effort,” said USA Head Coach Adam Krikorian. “We're looking forward to the semis against a young and talented Greek team.”
