USA Men’s Water Polo Beats Venezuela, 16-3, in Pan Am Opener

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, October 24. THE USA Water Polo Men's National Team opened the 2011 Pan American Games with a 16-3 victory over Venezuela at the Scotiabank Aquatics Center. Four goals from Tim Hutten (Seal Beach, Calif./UC-Irvine/Newport WPF) paced the offensive attack that saw eight different players find the back of the net. Merrill Moses (Palos Verdes, Calif./Pepperdine/NYAC) and Chay Lapin (Long Beach, Calif./UCLA/Shore) combined in net for nine saves. Team USA jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and led 12-0 late in the second period before Venezuela mounted a small rally to draw within 12-3 early in the third period. That would be as close as things would get as Team USA ran off four straight goals to take the victory.

Joining Hutten in the scoring column were Jeff Powers (San Luis Obispo, Calif./UC-Irvine/Newport WPF) and Ryan Bailey (Long Beach, Calif./UC-Irvine/Newport WPF) who each scored three times. They were complemented by Peter Varellas (Moraga, Calif./Stanford/Olympic Club) who scored twice while the quartet of Adam Wright (Seal Beach, Calif./UCLA/NYAC), JW Krumpholz (Santa Ana, Calif./USC/NYAC), Brian Alexander (Santa Ana, Calif./UCSB/Olympic Club) and Jesse Smith (Coronado, Calif./Pepperdine/NYAC) all scored one goal. The United States went 2/6 on power plays and 1/2 on penalty shots with Venezuela going 2/5 on player advantages. Team USA is back in action tomorrow against Brazil at 2:30pm CST.
