Amy Van Dyken “Doing Great,” Takes Post-Accident Selfie

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, June 10. AMY Van Dyken shared a photo of her from her hospital bed as she continues to recover from an accident involving an all-terrain vehicle, flashing a bit of a smile and sending words of optimism to her fans around the world.

As a refresher, Van Dyken was driving an all-terrain vehicle in Show Low, Ariz., about 180 miles east of Phoenix, and was thrown from the vehicle when she approached an embankment. Van Dyken lost consciousness briefly, and told her husband, Tom Rouen, and medical personnel that she had trouble breathing and could not feel her legs or feet. She was airlifted to the Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center for immediate treatment.

A letter posted by her family on Monday indicated that Van Dyken had severed her spine at the T11 vertebrae, and was progressing well after surgery. No further details from the Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center or Van Dyken’s family have been given concerning her prognosis.

Van Dyken was the first female American swimmer to win four gold medals in one Olympics, doing so at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. She returned to the Games in 2000 and won two more golds on relays. Van Dyken was an American record holder in the 50 freestyle and NCAA champion. After her retirement from competitive swimming, she went into broadcasting and a successful career as a radio talk show host in Phoenix and Los Angeles.
