Tasty Trifecta for Townsend as South African Wins Big at Speedo Arizona Invitational

MESA, Arizona, May 24. NYAC’s Darian Townsend nearly put up his best Katinka Hosszu impression as he swam in three of the four individual finals of the night, winning all three, at the Speedo Arizona Invitational this evening.

Townsend continued his ownership of this meet with a 1:51.58 to win the men’s 200-meter freestyle finale. Connor Stirling took second in 2:00.53 with Maxim Molokov placing third in 2:00.84. In a definite off event, Townsend grabbed the men’s 100-meter breaststroke title in 1:05.07, while Matthew Anderson touched second in the finale with a 1:06.96. Miles Dunn rounded out the top three in 1:07.94.

Townsend kept on winning, this time with a third title of the night when he clocked a 56.81 in the men’s 100-meter back. Alex Lezcano placed second in the event with a 1:00.61, while Josh Vedder finished third with a 1:01.44.

Townsend finally let some other swimmers have a chance to win by not competing in the men’s 200-meter fly. David Ramirez picked up that victory in 2:07.35 with Kevin Benavidez taking second in 2:16.44. Drew Eisen snagged third overall in the event with a 2:16.87.

The other well-known name at this meet, Noriko Inada of the Phoenix Swim Club, took home the women’s 100-meter backstroke in 1:03.72. Mattie Harrison placed second in 1:04.96 with Shelly Drozda earning third in 1:05.83.

Paulina Watson claimed the women’s 200-meter free title in 2:06.52 with Savanna Carlson (2:08.54) and Shelly Drozda (2:08.59) taking second and third. Janet Zhao raced her way past the field in the women’s 100-meter breast with a 1:13.93. Olivia Heflin (1:14.48) and Ellinore Duncan (1:16.42) turned in second and third-place finishes. Riley Neal earned the women’s 200-meter fly win tonight in 2:25.95. Matti Harrison placed second for the second time of the night with a 2:26.39, while Savanna Carlson picked up third-place honors in 2:28.49.
