Vinny Marciano Wraps Up NASA Showcase Classic With Two More NAG Records; Michael Andrew Wins Three

CLEARWATER, Florida, April 20. VINNY Marciano wrapped up an impressive week at the NASA Showcase Classic with two more national short course yards age group records today. Michael Andrew, meanwhile, closed out his 13-14 racing stint with three events.

In a time trial today between prelims and finals, Marciano unleashed a 47.89 to remove the 47.96 swum by Michael Andrew in the 11-12 age group in 2012. Marciano attempted to break the record last night in finals, but could only muster a 48.34 in the same session as his record-breaking swim in the 100 back.

Marciano returned in tonight’s finals to post a 23.63 in the 50 fly to break another Andrew record, this time a 23.65 from 2012. That makes four national age group records for Marciano this week. He finished out the meet with a 1:46.94.

Though he’s two days into his 15th year, Andrew is still eligible to break national age group records in the 13-14 division at the meet, since meet rules stipulate that he’s 14 years old throughout the meet. Andrew took one more run at his 400 IM record of 3:52.08, but came up short with a 3:55.36. He also won the 50 fly with a swift 21.28, an event in which USA Swimming does not keep national age group records. He followed that up with a 54.70 in the 100 breast, about a second off his NAG record of 53.88.
