Brendan McHugh Breaks Another Meet Record, Buerger Doubles At Virginia Sectionals

CHRISTIANBURG, Virginia, March 22. BRENDAN McHugh of the Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club broke his second meet record of the meet in the 200 breast, while Allegheny North Swim Club’s Zachary Buerger won another double on the third night of finals at the Speedo Christianburg Sectionals.

McHugh, who broke the meet record in the 100 breast last night, posted a personal best time of 1:55.43 to win the 200 breast. Michael McBryan of the Central Bucks Swim Team, a future Carolina Tarheel, took second with a personal best of 2:00.20. Thomas McCormick of Golden Ram Aquatics put up a personal best of 2:01.78 for third place.

Buerger, who will swim at Princeton next year, won the men’s 200 fly with a 1:47.40. Koya Osada of Duke Aquatics, a future Harvard swimmer, took second with a 1:48.22. Osada’s teammate Thomas Bilden went 1:49.56 for third.

Buerger also won the 100 back for his fourth win of the meet, putting up a time of 48.88 for first. Koya Osada touched second with a 49.47. Eagle Swim Team’s Jacob Lamparella placed third with a personal best time of 50.23.

The Central Bucks Swim Team women (Alexandra Szekely, Brittany Weiss, Hannah Zurmuhl, Emily Kosten) claimed the first win of the night in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.97. Eagle Swim Team (Geordie Enoch, Kristen Vargas, Isabella McElrath, Alayna Nielson) took second with a 1:45.94. Nation’s Capital Swim Club (Charlotte Fieeiki, Sarah Cahill, Emily Landeryou, Katherine Smith) touched third in 1:46.98.

On the men’s side, the Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club (Joseph Lumpkin, Colin McHugh, David Rowe, Robert Lincoln) won the 200 medley in 1:31.84. Central Bucks Swim Team (fKyle McElwee, Michael McBryan, Gregory Brocato, Andrew Zhugayevich) clocked in at 1:33.63 for second. Nittany Lion Aquatic Club (Bradley Gibble, Armand Apa, Robert Fenstermacher, Michael Kwasnik) posted a 1:33.91 for third.

Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club’s Delaney Walz won her third event of the meet in the 200 fly with a 2:00.15. Thirteen-year old Morgan Liberto of Columbia Aquatics Association shaved six seconds off her personal best for a second-place time of 2:04.23. Norwin Aqua Club’s Kathryn Painter hit the wall third in 2:05.04.

Central Bucks Swim Team swept the top three in the women’s 50 free. Hannah Zurmuhl touched first in a personal best 23.38. Thirteen-year old Morgan Scott hit the wall second in a personal best 23.48. Emily Kosten rounded out the top three with a time of 23.63.

Ali Khalafalla of Fork Union Aquatic Club won the men’s 50 free with a personal best time of 20.36. Zachary Buerger claimed second with a personal best 20.82. Alec Morin of Regency Park Swim Team touched third in a personal best time of 20.89.

Alexandra Szekely won her second event of the meet in the 200 breast, posting a 2:14.58. Geordie Enoch of Eagle Swim Team, a future Harvard swimmer, clocked in at 2:16.67 for second. Jewish Community Center Sailfish’s Lauren Barber put up a personal best 2:17.12 for third.

Alice Treuth of Coastal Aquatics Swim Team posted a 54.85 to win the women’s 100 back. Alexandra Szekely went a personal best 55.30 for second, while Geordie Enoch clocked in at 55.67 for third.

Egg Harbor Township’s Amanda Nunan followed up her win in the 1000 on Thursday with a win in the 500, clocking in at a personal best 4:52.29. Delaney Walz took second with a personal best 4:53.68. Eagle Swim Team’s Amanda Chabbott claimed third with a personal best 4:55.84.

Samuel Magnan of Parkland Aquatic Club won the men’s 500 with a 4:29.72. His teammate Herbert Shackleton finished second with a personal best 4:34.63. Samuel Pomajevich of Nation’s Capital Swim Club clocked in at personal best 4:35.56 for third.

The Central Bucks Swim Team women (Alexandra Szekely, Morgan Scott, Hannah Zurmuhl, Emily Kosten) picked up another relay win in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:24.30. Eagle Swim Team (Geordie Enoch, Alayna Nielson, Brooke St. Martin, Amanda Chabbott) posted a 3:28.99 for second. Allegheny North Swim Club (Lauren McGrath, Kayla Churman, Charlie Brickner, Morgan Soulia) placed third with a time of 3:29.06.

Nation’s Capital Swim Club (Samuel Pomajevich, Xavier Laracuente, Justin Touve, Graham Baird) won the men’s 400 free relay with a time of 3:06.42. Central Bucks Swim Team (Michael McBryan, Kyle McElwee, Andrew Zhugayevich, Gregory Brocato) took second with a 3:06.58. Allegheny North Swim Club (Samuel Rutan, Casey Melzer, Jacob Krivacs, Zachary Buerger) touched in 3:06.75 for third.
