Michael Andrew’s Run on National Age Group Records Highlights Speedo College Station Sectional

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 2. THIS weekend, the Speedo Champions Series continued with a meet in College Station, Texas, where 14-year-old pro Michael Andrew put on a show with a couple more 13-14 national age group records in yards format.

Setting age group records is pretty routine for Andrew, and this weekend he focused a bit more on the longer distance events. He opened up the weekend with a 1:49.40 in the 200-yard fly prelims before taking ninth overall in the event with a 1:46.29. His finals swim smashed Ricky Berens’ 2003 age group mark of 1:48.24.

Andrew then turned in a 1:40.38 in the 200-yard free preliminaries before clocking a 47.79 in the 100-yard fly prelims. Neither set records, but the prelim swims definitely primed the pump for a 400-yard IM time trial, where he clocked a 3:52.08. That performance crushed Curtis Ogren’s 2010 record of 3:54.23. Andrew returned later in the day to finish 16th in the 200 free with a 1:43.27 and fourth in the 100 fly with a 48.57.

Next up, Andrew downed his 100-yard back age group record of 48.68 from last year with a pair of swims. First, he charted a 48.37 in prelims before coming back during finals to take third overall with a 48.10. Additionally, he clocked a 1:49.79 in the 200-yard IM in prelims, then put up a 20.50 in the 50-yard free prelims before taking second overall in the event in the finale with a 20.24, both shy of Ryan Hoffer’s national age group record of 20.02. He also took third in the 200 IM finale with a 1:48.64.

Meanwhile, the Aquazot foursome of Daniel Tran, Tyler Lin, Justin Hanson and Thomas Smith posted a 1:31.90 during time trials in the 15-16 200-yard medley relay. That time beat the previously record of 1:33.41 set by the Crow Canyon Sharks in 2011.
