Savanna Faulconer Shines in Final Night of YMCA Long Course Nationals

ATLANTA, Georgia, August 2. MIDDLE Tyger 15-year-old Savanna Faulconer closed the show at the YMCA Long Course Nationals with yet another strong night of swimming as she was a part of two YMCA records.

In the final team standings, Middle Tyger won the combined race with 1305 points, while Triangle Area took second with 999.5 points. Somerset Valley (929.5), Wilton Family (878) and Upper Main Line (579.5) rounded out the top five.

Faulconer, easily one of the top performers of the meet this week at just 15 years of age, tied the YMCA record in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke with a 1:11.26. That matched the time set by Wilton’s KC Moss back in 2009, and blasted Faulconer’s lifetime best of 1:14.37 from earlier this summer.

Wilton’s Eric Ronda clipped Door County’s Conner McHugh in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke, 1:02.80 to 1:03.11, as both swimmers beat a history YMCA record of 1:03.98 set by Marty Hubbell of Countryside YMCA back in 1992. Ronda had to put up a 33.23 final 50 to overtake McHugh down the stretch.

Somerset Valley’s Lindsay Temple (27.31), Julieyanna Parker (26.42), Holly Christensen (26.23) and Katrina Kuhn (26.01) became the first women’s 200-meter freestyle relay under 1:46 with a winning time of 1:45.97. That swim downed the Middle Tyger YMCA record of 1:46.31.

Middle Tyger’s Ali Galyer (1:03.36), Savanna Faulconer (1:11.55), Kate Kelly (1:02.96) and Katrina Konopka (57.19) took down the women’s 400-meter medley relay YMCA record with a 4:15.06. That swim obliterated the 2012 mark set by a similar team from Middle Tyger that went 4:16.94.

Somerset Valley’s Dylan Sali (55.97), Zack Warner (1:04.38), David Chung (57.60) and Brad Zdroik (51.18) picked up the YMCA record in the men’s 400-meter medley relay with a 3:49.13. That’s more than a second drop from Somerset’s previous record of 3:50.99 from 2012.

Brandywine’s Elise Lankiewicz blasted the final 50 meters with a 34.74 to capture the women’s 200-meter fly title in 2:16.26, while Middle Tyger’s Amanda McNulty finished second in 2;16.89 after leading at the 150-meter mark.

Hickory’s Sava Turcanu crushed the field in the men’s 200-meter fly with a 2:03.85. That’s a huge lifetime best, considering he came into today with a 2:06.05 top time from last year’s YMCA long course national championships.

Upper Main Line’s Emily Cornell, 15, took home the women’s 50-meter backstroke title with a 30.42, while Somerset Valley’s Dylan Sali broke 27 for the first time with a 26.21 to win the men’s 50-meter back. That swim eclipsed his 2012 YMCA long course relay leadoff of 27.28 as his best time ever.

Triangle Area’s Bailey Maloney (23.99), Chris Kohut (24.09), Colin Ellington (22.85) and Ben Mayes (23.71) took home the men’s 200-meter free relay in 1:34.64.
