Three Replacement Swimmers Named to USA Squad for World University Games

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, June 29. USA Swimming named three new swimmers to the World University Games squad, with two filling spots left vacant by swimmers who were promoted to the world championship team this week.

Two of those swimmers who will compete in Kazan, Russia, represent the Indiana University Hoosiers in the collegiate season. Cody Miller will take Kevin Cordes' place in the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke events, while James Wells will take over for Eugene Godsoe in the 50 and 100 backstrokes.

Cordes was long believed to not have a permanent place on the WUG team. His stellar performances at the NCAA championships in March portended fast swims here in Indianapolis, and he will race in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events in Barcelona. As for Godsoe, he was to swim the sprint backstrokes in Russia, but will now take on the 50 and 100 butterfly events in Barcelona.

Andi Murez will swim on the 400 free relay in Russia, taking over for Catherine Breed, who withdrew due to injury according to USA Swimming. Murez was scheduled to swim in the Maccabiah Games in Jerusalem next month but with both meets taking place at the same time, she will only compete in Russia.

Tom Luchsinger was also moved up to the world championship squad after winning the 200 butterfly this week, but no one was named by USA Swimming to move into his spot. Kyle Whitaker would be the likely choice, since he is already swimming the 200 IM at the World University Games and was third in the 200 fly at the 2012 US Open, the major selection meet for the World University Games.

Update: Whitaker will swim the 200 fly in Russia, and with McBroom's addition to the world team, two existing athletes will take his spots in the 400 and 1500 free: Adam HInshaw in the 400 and Ryan Feeley in the 1500.

Mike Alexandrov, already on the team in the 100 breast, will now swim the 200 breast in B.J. Johnson's place.

Mike Bottom will handle double coaching duties, working as head coach for the men's World University Games team and assistant coach for the men's team at the world championships.
