Michael Phelps/Bob Bowman-Owned Horse Wins Race at Pimlico

BALTIMORE, Maryland, June 2. CERRO, the racehorse whose owners include Olympic legend Michael Phelps and his longtime coach Bob Bowman, won the Canonero II Stakes as part of the Pimlico Stakes in Baltimore on Saturday.

Cerro won his first domestic race on Saturday, completing the 1.12-mile course in 1:51.81. Cerro went into the race as the odds-on favorite, according to the Associated Press. Race results indicate those who betted on the horse to win won $3.20 for every dollar they bet.

Neither Phelps nor Bowman were at the track to celebrate their horse's win. Bowman is in Santa Clara, Calif., coaching swimmers from the North Baltimore Aquatic Club — as well as a few from China — at the Arena Grand Prix meet. Phelps has been hanging around poker players the past few days, participating in his first World Series of Poker tournament in Las Vegas, according to various media reports.

Cerro, a three-year-old colt, is owned by Team Valor International. Other horses in team Valor's stable include Infinite Magic and Animal Kingdom.
