PHOENIX, Arizona, December 13. RENOWNED college coaches Matt Kredich and Mike Bottom will lead a promising group of athletes at next summer's World University Games, set to take place in Kazan, Russia, in July.
Kredich was named today as the women's head coach, while Bottom earned the bid as men's head coach. This marks their first stints as head coaches for an American international squad. Most notably, this is only Kredich's second-ever international coaching nod after years of churning out quality athletes at the University of Tennessee. He was an assistant coach for the 2010 WUG team.
"I feel very honored to be asked to serve on this staff," Kredich said. "Team USA is known worldwide as a leader in swimming. We have an outstanding record of success internationally, and so I'm very excited to be in a position to help build on this tradition. The rest of the staff is a group of coaches that I have tremendous respect for, so I'm excited to work with and learn from them."
Bottom, now head coach at the University of Michigan, has been working on American and international coaching staffs for more than a decade, most recently as the head coach of the Serbian Olympic teams in 2008 and 2012. He was also an assistant coach for the USA at the 2001 and 2009 world championships.
Interestingly, USA Swimming picked the two men to coach only one gender each at the World University Games, despite their recent promotions to coaching newly-combined teams at their schools. Bottom was named head coach in August when the two teams were combined
, while Kredich took over the men's and women's teams in mid-April after the firing of longtime coach John Trembley
Bottom will have a talented trio of men working with him on the men's side: Kelly Kremer (University of Minnesota head coach), Rich DeSelm (University of North Carolina) and Rick DeMont (University of Arizona assistant coach). Kredich will have an equally impressive group working with him as assistant coach: Kevin Blum (Coronado-Navy Swim Association), Carol Capitani (University of Texas women's head coach) and Paul Stafford (Terrapins Swim Team).
