Mission Viejo Nadadores’ Diving Well Vandalized

MISSION VIEJO, California, October 2. THE diving well at the famed Mission Viejo Nadadores Aquatics Swim Complex was vandalized last weekend, creating thousands of dollars in damage to the facility.

In an article on OCVarsity.com, Dan Albano reported that the major damage done included shattering the glass door of the diving office with a cement block and stealing one of the iconic Mission Viejo logos from the diving tower. The story also mentions that the vandals flipped back one of the 1-meter diving boards. The story estimated that $3,000 in damage was done to the area. No damage was reportedly done to the facility's competition pool.

Practice for the diving team was canceled Monday while crews cleaned up the mess. Police found traces of blood near the hot tub in the diving area, suggesting one or more of the vandals were injured during the incident.

The Mission Viejo diving team began in 1977 with renowned coaches Sammy Lee and Ron O'Brien. Greg Louganis was one of the first divers to sign up for the team, and would go on to win five Olympic medals from 1976 to 1988.

The team currently includes Camryn Hidalgo, who will compete in the FINA World Junior Championships next week.
