Joel Shinofield Named New Executive Director of College Swimming Coaches Association of America

PHOENIX, Arizona, August 17. JOEL Shinofield has been named as the new executive director of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, taking over for Bob Groseth, whose three-year term ends Aug. 31.

Shinofield, a former coach at Washington & Lee University for nine years, is not new to the administration at the CSCAA. He's been on the board and served as secretary since 2005 and also served as president of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference for six years.

CSCAA President Kirk Sanocki, also the head swim coach at Wingate University, has known Shinofield for about 10 years, and said Shinofield's long-term plan for the organization stood out among all interested candidates.

“I'm anxious to see some of the plans he will share with us when he starts,” Sanocki told Swimming World. “He is clearly prepared for the job based on his involvement with the organization in the past eight years.”

When asked about the top priority on his list when he begins work as executive director, Shinofield simply said: “Listening.”

“I want to serve our coaches,” he said. “I want to find ideas for promoting our sport and find out what they (coaches) think about running our national championships. And with how highly rated the Olympic Trials was, we need to do something to fill the void.”

Another priority he mentioned was continuing the relationship the CSCAA has with the American Swimming Coaches Association and USA Swimming, a bond that his predecessors Groseth and Phil Whitten created.

“It's great to follow in their footsteps,” Shinofield said. “They made some great strides for our organization.”

Shinofield admits that he has missed coaching since resigning as head coach and aquatics director at Washington & Lee in March. He's filled that desire by working at a boys' camp in Maine this summer, and will most likely be too busy in his new role to think about working on deck full-time.

“If I can work as hard as our coaches do,” he said, “I think we are going to be in good shape.”
