USA Swimming Sectionals, Iowa City: Marcus Guttmann, Michael Weiss Smash Pool Records on Final Night

IOWA CITY, Iowa, July 23. THE Speedo Champions Series meet at the University of Iowa Aquatic Center concluded last night with pool records falling in five of the eight finals contested.

Club Hawkeye's Emily Hovren lowered her own pool record in the women's 200m IM en route to victory. Her time of 2:17.81 bested her own record of 2:19.18 from last month. Minnesota Aquatics' Elizabeth Weitz also came in under the record with a 2:18.19 for second. Wisconsin's Aja Van Hout placed third in 2:20.30. Wisconsin's Michael Weiss, already a winner of the 400m free and 400m IM at this meet, set a new pool record to win the 200m IM in 2:01.95. That broke Daniel Lester's 2011 mark of 2:04.90 by almost three seconds and was five and a half seconds ahead of Club Hawkeye's Tyler Lentz (2:07.48). Tariq Miller of Wisconsin rounded out the top three in 2:08.92.

Nasa Wildcat's Erin Sosdian just missed the pool record in the women's mile, but her final time of 17:12.48 was still good enough for the win. Morgan Dickson of Patriot Aquatics touched second in 17:15.60, while New Trier's Campbell Costley swam a 17:32.39 for third.

In the women's 50m free, Wisconsin teammates and sisters Ivy and Ruby Martin finished 1-2, with Ivy breaking the year-old pool record in the event. Ivy swam a 25.61 to lower Rebecca Thompson's 25.91 from last summer. Ruby placed second in 26.16, while Mary Schneider of the Academy Bullets took third in 26.48. Club Hawkeye's Jordan Huff won his first event of the meet, taking the men's 50m free title in 23.39. Minnesota's Benjamin Griggs was second (23.57), followed by Club Hawkeye's Gianni Sesto (23.71) in third.

Wisconsin's Marcus Guttmann broke the pool record in the men's mile by a whopping 24 seconds, posting a 15:58.04 to obliterate Francis Bott's time of 16:22.08 from last summer. Guttmann's teammate, Tyler Hines, also broke the pool record, swimming seven seconds faster than the old time at 16:15.87. Southwest Aquatics' Joseph Szczupakiewicz took third in 16:16.38.

In the closest race of the evening, Wisconsin's quartet of Hannah Ross, Jennah Haney, Ivy Martin and Ruby Martin claimed the women's 400m medley relay in 4:20.60, just .03 ahead of the squad from Academy Bullets. In the men's relay, Club Hawkeye's Grant Betulius, Andrew Marciniak, Byron Butler and Jordan Huff lowered the previous pool record of 3:49.33 to 4:35.12, almost six seconds in front of Wisconsin's 3:50.93.
