OMAHA, Nebraska, June 27. DAY three of preliminary qualifying kicked off with a bang at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials as NBAC's Allison Schmitt and California's Dana Vollmer, already guaranteed spots on the Olympic team from earlier swims, lit up the pool in the women's 200 free.

In heat nine of 11, Vollmer initially shot down the Trials textile best with a sterling time of 1:58.34. That swim bettered the 1:58.65 set by Nicole Haislett of Florida back in Indianapolis in 1992, and not bettered until a 2008, when Katie Hoff finished with the record in 1:55.88 during a techsuit-era year. Vollmer is looking to reclaim her Trials title from 2004, when she won in 1:59.20.

NBAC's Allison Schmitt undercut Vollmer's time in the final heat with a 1:58.02 to now own the Trials textile best heading into semifinals. Schmitt is looking for her first 200 free Trials win after placing second to Hoff in 2008 with a 1:55.92. Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin checked in with a third-place time of 1:58.62, also under the Trials textile best, but done in heat 10 after Vollmer already blasted the pool.

Athens Bulldogs owned the next three spots as Shannon Vreeland (1:58.79), Morgan Scroggy (1:58.81) and Megan Romano (1:58.98) qualified fourth, fifth and sixth with Vreeland posting a lifetime best in the event. Lauren Perdue (1:59.13) and Alyssa Anderson (1:59.18) rounded out the top eight.

Plenty of other notable names made the top 16, as seen below, while a few notables also missed. Defending champ Katie Hoff, who is recovering from food poisoning, missed semis with a 20th-place 2:00.68, while Olympian Rhi Jeffrey, on a bit of a comeback while training in New Zealand, took 57th in 2:03.27.
