Longhorn Aquatics Elite Invite: Allison Schmitt Breaks US Open Record in 200 Free with 1:55.04

AUSTIN, Texas, June 2. NORTH Baltimore's Allison Schmitt stole the spotlight during the second night of action in Austin, breaking the US Open record and posting the second fastest 200 free in the world this year at 1:55.04. Cammile Adams also made a statement with a personal best in the women's 400 IM.

Back in January, Aggie Swim Club's Cammile Adams burst onto the scene in the women's 400 IM with a 4:38.80. Tonight, she improved upon that time with a 4:38.27, a personal best and the 16th best time in the world this year. Adams' teammate at Texas A&M, Sarah Henry, finished in 4:44.17 for second, while North Baltimore's Annie Zhu took third in 4:52.42. In the men's IM, Michael Phelps made a rare appearance in an event he claims to have given up, posting a very respectable 4:15.88, slightly off his top time of 4:12.51 from March. Phelps' teammate at North Baltimore, Chase Kalisz, finished right behind in 4:16.86. Bradley Ally of Club Wolverine was third in 4:18.80.

In the women's 200 free, Allison Schmitt threw down a blistering 1:55.04, less than a tenth off her own American record of 1:54.96 from the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome and the fastest time ever recorded on American soil. Katie Hoff held the previous record at 1:55.88 from the 2008 US Olympic Trials. It is the second fastest time in the world this year behind Camille Muffat's 1:54.87. Missy Franklin finished a distant second in 1:57.91, while Athens Bulldog's Shannon Vreeland took third in 1:59.51.

In the men's 200 free, the top five swimmers finished within seven-tenths of each other, making for a very exciting race. Longhorn's Dax Hill got to the wall first in 1:50.06, while Texas teammate Clay Youngquist took second in 1:50.57 and Club Wolverine's Wu Peng finished third in 1:50.61.

Missy Franklin of the Colorado Stars continued her march toward a berth in the London Olympics with a solid time of 2:08.74 in the women's 200 back. Franklin has been faster this year as she posted a 2:07.97 in March. Athens Bulldog's Megan Romano took second in 2:11.74, while Nitro's Quinn Carrozza (2:12.32) was third.
Stanford's Matt Thompson pulled away from the field on the last 50 and won the men's 200 back in 2:00.49. Hayes Johnson of Longhorn took second in 2:02.26 while Austin Surhoff, competing unattached, recorded the third-best time of 2:02.43.

Megan Romano, the American record-holder in the 200 free in short course yards, showed she has plenty of speed in long course too, winning the women's 50 free in 25.23. North Baltimore's Allison Schmitt, last night's winner in the 100 free, finished second in 25.40, in front of SwimAtlanta's Amanda Weir (25.50). The men's 50 free went to Club Wolverine's George Bovell in 22.11, inside the top 25 times in the world in 2012. Longhorn's Jimmy Feigen swam a 22.21 to finish second while North Baltimore's Chris Brady went 22.78 for third.
