By David Rieder

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, December 10. MICHAEL Phelps and Allison Schmitt posted some more fast short course yards times on the second of three days at the annual North Baltimore Christmas meet at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Phelps first claimed the men's 400 IM in 3:40.92, falling well short of his lifetime best of 3:36.26 from 2006 which stands second all-time behind Tyler Clary (3:35.98). Phelps' NBAC teammate Chase Kalisz took second in 3:45.78, while splitting faster than Phelps on the second half of the race. Phelps also crushed his competitors in the 100 back, posting a time of 46.54.

Schmitt won the women's 500 free in 4:35.00, not far off her best time of 4:32.71 set at last year's NCAA Championships, which also stands as the NCAA record. Schmitt is the equal third fastest performer all-time, as she is tied with Kate Ziegler and behind Katie Hoff (4:30.47) and Dagny Knutson (4:31.18). Notably, teammate Gillian Ryan took second tonight in 4:42.85. Ryan also finished as runner-up in the 400 free and won the 800 free at Long Course Nationals this past August. Schmitt, meanwhile showed some range in winning the 50 free in 22.48.

Germantown's Arthur Frayler took the men's 500 free in 4:23.74, just missing his best time of 4:23.32. NBAC's Chris Brady won the 50 free in 20.01, and Kalisz won the 200 breast in 1:57.35. On the women's side, North Baltimore's Jordan Surhoff placed first in the 200 breast in 2:15.50, and teammate Willa Wang took the 400 IM in 4:12.05.
